Ayurveda an Overview

The Indian art of healing, Ayurveda literally means the science (veda) of life (ayus). Written almost 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda has the answer to almost all ailments. No wonder then, that this science is referred to as the mother of all healing.  There are five texts, which form the basic tenets of Hinduism – Rig Veda, Sam Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. Ayurveda is a part of the Atharva Veda.
As per the Rig Veda, the human life consists of three doshas (flaws)—vata (air), pitta (bile) and kapha (phlegm). A balance of these doshas have to be maintained for an ideal human life. The basis of Ayurvedic treatment – the tri-sutras—is also mentioned in the Rig Veda. The tri-sutras are diagnosis, symptoms and treatment of an illness. These three are further elaborated with the eight parts of Ayurveda as mentioned in the Atharva Veda.
These eight sections of Ayurveda are: Surgery, internal medicine, ENT, Psychiatry, Toxicology, Paediatrics, Immunity and Aphrodisiacs.
One of the ancient texts that covers all the aspects of Ayurveda is the Charaka Samahita. What is fascinating is that conceived eons before the existence of modern technology, this science has survived the test of time, to be even today—the best form of healing.
Ayurveda, due to its effectiveness has gone way beyond the land of its origin. Today many European nations and the US too have adopted Ayurvedic techniques.
Humans today have become very distant from nature. Today’s lifestyles do not call for any interaction with nature. Ayurveda takes the human body closer to nature. Due to which, unlike other forms of medicine, Ayurveda is the safest and most reliable. And as it is born from the same nature that protects all animals alike, it leaves no side-effects or unwanted reactions.
